An aquarium in Japan is shocking visitors with its Christmas display -- using an eco-friendly electric eel to illuminate the lights on its holiday tree.
Each time the eel moves, two aluminum panels gather enough electricity to light up the 2-meter (6 ft 6 in) tall tree, decked out in white, in glowing intermittent flashes.

Late last month, the Australian Solar Sailor company announced they’d signed a deal with China's biggest shipping line, COSCO, to fit some of their jumbo jet sized solar-powered sails to a tanker and bulk carrier.
The 30 metre long sails, festooned in photovoltaic panels are expected to catch enough wind to reduce fuel costs by between 20% and 40%, whilst those PV cells will provide the ships with 5% of their electricity. A computer automatically angles the sails for maximum wind and solar efficiency, and if all goes to plan the sails will have recovered their initial cost within four years.

Roly Pig Composter
It's not quite alterna-energy, but my husband and I are now obsessing over the Roly Pig Composter. The company also offers solar panels and has links to a bunch of rebate info and stuff if you dig into the site. Just an fyi, but I thought folks might be interested. :)

A Silicon Valley start-up called Nanosolar shipped its first solar panels -- priced at $1 a watt. That's the price at which solar energy gets cheaper than coal.

I can't imagine making these is nastier on the environment than coal.

I hope continuing to make them is environmentally sustainable.

Maybe I should get an electric eel for the tree. . . .

Can that be true?
I received a leaflet from the recycling effort at my other job today. It says:

Recycling one aluminum can
saves enough energy to run a
TV for three hours
or the
equivalent of a half a gallon
of gasoline.

Can that be true? Wow.
